About This Court

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit is one of the thirteen U.S. courts of appeals in the federal judiciary. It sits in the Byron White United States Courthouse in Denver, Colorado.

Jurisdiction

The Tenth Circuit's territorial jurisdiction covers six states: Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, and Wyoming. It also has jurisdiction over the small portions of Yellowstone National Park that extend into Montana and Idaho.

What the court hears

  • Final decisions, and certain interlocutory orders, of the U.S. District Courts located within its six-state territory
  • Appeals from decisions of certain federal administrative agencies and boards where federal law provides for direct circuit-court review, such as petitions to review or enforce orders of the National Labor Relations Board

Practicing before the court

Attorneys seeking to practice before the Tenth Circuit must be admitted to the court's bar under Federal Rule of Appellate Procedure 46 and the circuit's local rules. Rule 46 contemplates payment of an admission fee set by local rule or court order; the court does not charge a renewal fee, and admission is permanent absent removal or suspension.
